As we head into April, spring is really starting to make its presence felt. The longer days and warmer temperatures not only bring an extra pep in our steps but also in our furry friends. It's interesting to note that our canine companions may experience changes in energy levels due to the seasons, much like us. Studies suggest that dogs can suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), leading to lower energy and even depression during the dreary winter months. Conversely, research indicates that dogs produce less melatonin in the warmer months, which contributes to higher energy levels. Spring Activities for Dogs—such as hiking, playing fetch in the park, or enjoying leisurely walks amidst the blooming flora—are essential to keep your pets active and happy. An active dog is a healthy and happy dog, so take advantage of the beautiful spring weather to explore and play with your canine pals.

Chemistry aside, we all know that spring brings about new life. This means lots of new smells, and critters coming out of hibernation. Birds, squirrels, more dogs and their humans out on the street - so many things to bark at, so little time!

🌸 So what can we do to help burn some of this energy off? Here are some tips for Spring Activities for Dogs:

  1. Rather than looking at the duration of your walk, look at the quality! Choose a walk that takes you across some more challenging terrain, or go for a sniff safari! Let your pooch enjoy all those amazing springtime smells!
  2. Work on your recall! Spring often means more distractions, so it is a great idea to make sure your dog has a reliable recall, whether you choose to let him or her off leash or just as a safety precaution.
  3. Choose a new trick to train your pup on. This will help keep both of you sharp and your mind’s working.
  4. Look into other enrichment activities. Not all energy-burning has to be done physically - giving your dog’s mind a workout is just as important as a physical workout! There are tons of resources online on how to make your own enrichment toys, or you can purchase them at your local pet store.

🐶🍃 There are so many Spring Activities for Dogs that you and your bud can enjoy the spring weather! Let us know your favourite way to manage your dog’s spring fever on social media - we love to see our healthygang having fun!
