Welcoming a new puppy into your home is one of the most exciting moments in a person’s life. But it’s also one of the most stressful. The best way to ensure a smooth transition as you add a four-legged member to your family is to be as prepared as possible for the first few days and weeks. And the easiest way to do that is by following our New Puppy Checklist. Tick off all the steps as you go and get ready to make life-changing memories with your brand-new BFF.

Puppy-Proof Your Home:

Just like with a human baby, puppies are naturally curious and tend to explore everything with their mouths. Remove any hazardous items (think: electrical cords, small objects, or toxic plants) from your puppy's reach. Create a designated safe space for them to roam, play and nap peacefully.

Buy Essential Supplies:

Get all the necessary supplies ready. This includes a comfortable dog bed, appropriate-sized bowls for food and water, quality food and treats, a collar and leash, identification tags, grooming tools, and safe chew toys to keep your puppy busy.

Make an Appointment with a Veterinarian:

Schedule a visit to the vet for a thorough health check, vaccinations, and advice on a proper feeding schedule. Discuss microchipping and set up a plan for future vaccinations and preventive care.

Create a Routine:

Dogs thrive on consistency, and establishing a routine from day one helps your puppy feel secure. Set regular feeding times, potty breaks, and play sessions. A routine not only helps with house training but also provides a sense of security for your new furry friend.

Find Opportunities for Socialization:

The earlier you expose your puppy to different people, environments, and experiences, the more likely they are to grow into a confident, well-adjusted adult dog. But avoid overwhelming them too much on the first few days — gradual introductions are key.

Begin Basic Training:

Start basic training exercises early on. Simple commands like sit, stay, and come can lay the foundation for a well-behaved companion. Positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, goes a long way in encouraging good behaviour. You may want to research dog trainers in your area if you think you’ll need some help.

Practice Patience:

Above all, be patient and shower your new puppy with love. The first day in a new home can be overwhelming, so offer comfort and reassurance. Spend quality time bonding with your puppy to create a strong and lasting connection.
