Golden Retrievers make amazing buds and with Feb. 3 being National Golden Retriever Day, it’s the perfect time to brush up on tips and tricks for keeping our Golden Retriever friends happy and healthy. Golden Retriever care involves more than just providing food and shelter so read on for Golden Retriever Care 101!

🐩 Grooming:

Golden Retrievers have a thick, water-resistant double coat that requires regular brushing. Aim for at least two to three times a week to prevent matting and reduce shedding. While Golden Retrievers don't need frequent baths, washing them every six to eight weeks helps their coats stay clean and healthy.

🐾 Exercise:

Golden Retrievers are an active breed and they need at least 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. Daily walks are a great option, but you could also take advantage of Golden Retrievers’ love of water by giving them opportunities to swim — whether at a local pond or in a kiddie pool in the backyard. Swimming is a low-impact activity that puts less strain on joints and muscles, which is ideal if your dog has arthritis or hip dysplasia — both of which Golden Retrievers are prone to. Since Goldens are smart dogs, you’ll also want to stimulate their brains with enrichment games like hide-and-seek and puzzle toys. But, above all, Goldens (being retrievers)  have major talent when it comes to playing fetch.

🌿 Nutrition:

Feed your Golden a well-balanced, high-quality dog food suitable for their age, size, and activity level. Check with your vet to determine the appropriate portion size and feeding schedule. Make sure your Golden has a healthy, nutritious diet that’s not too high in calories because they are among the dog breeds at highest risk of obesity! If your Golden is currently on a kibble diet, consider replacing half the portion with Healthybud’s Freeze Dried Raw bites to mix in high quality nutrients and flavour.

🏆 Training:

Golden Retrievers respond well to positive reinforcement. Use low-calorie training treats, praise, and affection to encourage good behaviour, making training sessions enjoyable for both you and your pup. Golden Retrievers thrive on routine and clear expectations, so maintaining consistency in training will lead to the best results.
