Corgis are undeniably adorable with their distinct appearance (are they dogs or loaves of bread with fluffy butts?!) and their charming personalities. They were, after all, Queen Elizabeth’s favourite breed... However, owning a Corgi comes with responsibilities to ensure they lead happy, healthy lives. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about Corgi care — from nutrition and exercise to grooming and healthcare.
🌱 Nutrition:
Proper nutrition is the foundation of your Corgi's health and wellbeing, making it the most important aspect of Corgi care. Choose a high-quality dog food made specifically for small or medium-sized breeds, taking into account your Corgi's age, weight, and activity level. Look for a formula that lists meat as the first ingredient and is free from fillers, artificial additives, and unnecessary preservatives. Instead, opt for nutrient-rich ingredients like real meat, fruits, and vegetables.
🐕 Exercise:
Corgis are energetic and active dogs that require regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. Aim for at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day, such as brisk walks, playtime in the yard, or interactive games like fetch or agility training. Be mindful not to overexert your Corgi, especially in hot weather, as they are prone to heat sensitivity.
🥇 Training:
Early socialization and training are crucial for Corgis to develop into well-behaved companions. Start training your Corgi as soon as you bring them home, focusing on basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and rewards to encourage good behaviour and discourage unwanted behaviours.
🪮 Grooming:
Corgis have a double coat that sheds seasonally, so regular grooming is essential to keep their coat healthy and reduce shedding. Brush your Corgi's coat at least once a week to remove loose hair and prevent matting. Pay special attention to areas prone to tangles like behind the ears and under the legs. Also trim your Corgi's nails regularly and clean their ears to prevent infections.
❤️🩹 Healthcare:
Regular veterinary check-ups are vital for monitoring your Corgi's health. Keep up with vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm medication as recommended by your veterinarian. Look out for signs of potential health issues. Corgis are particularly prone to hip dysplasia (peep our joint-boosting chews for help in that department!), Degenerative Myelopathy (spinal cord deterioration), and Von Willebrand’s Disease (a bleeding disorder) among some other conditions.
