Puppies are obviously such joy – but a lot of work too! It can be overwhelming to learn the best ways to help your new dog adjust to your home and routine. There’s a lot of advice out there, and every pup is different!
The rule of 3s is an easy and helpful way to start helping your puppy adjust to their new home. This 3-3-3 rule represents the phases and milestones your new dog will go through.
You can alter these rules as needed for your house and puppy. But in general, these guidelines will help you and your new best bud get comfortable with each other.
Read on to learn what the rule of 3s is, and how it works for puppies.
😨 Rule 1: 3 days
The first three days in a new home are tough for a puppy. They may be feeling:
- Not like themselves
During this time, it’s normal for your puppy to avoid food and water, hide under tables or beds, curl up in their crate, and/or test boundaries. It’s all part of the process of adjusting to their new space and getting comfortable.
You can help your puppy through these early days by setting up a secure area away from children, other pets, and noise. Put their crate in this spot, with the door open and a cozy blanket or bed inside.
🙂 Rule 2: 3 weeks
A few weeks into your time together, your puppy is getting used to their new home and feeling more comfortable. After three weeks, your dog will be settling into their environment. And at this stage, you probably have a routine in progress for walks, feeding, and playtime.
At this stage, you’re probably starting to see more of your puppy’s true personality as they get bigger and more at home.
It’s also normal for behavioural issues to show up now, as your dog lets their guard down. Work to solve them at this stage, before they become set.
😃 Rule 3: 3 months
By now, your puppy should be comfortable in your home. You’ve had time to build trust and a bond with your bud, and they’ve had time to feel secure with your family.
This is a great time to focus on setting the routines you’ve been building, now that you know more about what works for your dog and your schedule.
These tips aren’t only helpful for puppies! You can use the 3-3-3 rule to help any new dog to your home adjust. Whatever your dog’s age, these stages are a great way to understand how your pup feels while becoming part of your family.
